Last weekend
There are events that we mark in our calendars, year after year, for the genuine pleasure of reuniting and sharing experiences and sensibilities. Insitu – Nature Image Festival, which took place last weekend in Vouzela, is one such events.
Anyone who follows the nature photography scene in Portugal knows that this festival has been consolidating its position in its own unique way. It seeks diversity of sensibilities, broadening the visual spectrum and striving to be one of the most authentic festivals of its kind. For two days, Vouzela once again became a meeting point for photographers and enthusiasts who share a common language: respect and fascination for the natural world.
This year, my participation had a different flavour and an added responsibility. I had the privilege of being one of the guest speakers, sharing the stage with names whose work I looked at with genuine curiosity. My presentation was not about pure technique or the relentless pursuit of perfection. I decided to bring along photographs that are close to my heart and share my personal view of the freedom that amateurism allows me. It was about this uncompromising search that I talked to the audience, showing a little of my journey. I photograph what I find, without haste or obligation, and it is this diverse nature that I seek to show. Talking about this, in a space where everyone shares the same interest, is rewarding.
However, these words are not just meant to sum up the event or my lecture. Above all, they are meant to express my gratitude to the organisers. I believe that thanks should be given by name, so thank you to Manuel, Pedro and João for the effort they put in year after year to put the pieces of the puzzle together, but also to Barbara for the way she presents the festival, which she does in a genuine and careful manner, representing the festival on stage.
Often, those who attend these festivals have no idea of the logistical complexity that goes on behind the scenes. The careful, attentive and friendly way in which the organisers welcome those who attend, whether speakers or audience members , I have been in both roles, is evident. We feel welcome, in a friendly, almost family-like atmosphere. It is this closeness that facilitates the exchange of ideas and creates lasting bonds. There are people I only get to talk to when I go to Vouzela.
During the weekend, there were presentations, conversations, exchanges of ideas. People who photograph for passion, people who do it professionally, people who are just starting out. Regardless of photographic style or field of action, everyone was in the same space, without hierarchies, just wanting to share. That is the spirit of Insitu, and that is what makes it special.
Há eventos que marcamos na agenda, ano após ano, pelo prazer genuíno do reencontro e pela partilha de experiências e sensibilidades. O Insitu – Festival de Imagem de Natureza, que decorreu no passado fim de semana em Vouzela, é um desses exemplos.
Quem acompanha o panorama da fotografia de natureza em Portugal sabe que este festival tem vindo a consolidar o seu espaço de forma muito própria. Procura a diversidade de sensibilidades alargando o espectro visual e ser um dos mais autênticos. Durante dois dias, Vouzela transformou-se novamente num ponto de convergência para fotógrafos, biólogos e entusiastas que partilham uma linguagem comum, o respeito e o fascínio pelo mundo natural.
Este ano, a minha participação teve um sabor diferente e uma responsabilidade acrescida. Tive o privilégio de ser um dos oradores convidados, de partilhar o palco com nomes cujo trabalho me fez olhar com curiosidade genuína. A minha apresentação não foi sobre técnica pura ou sobre a busca incessante por algo perfeito. Decidi levar comigo fotografias que me são próximas e partilhar a minha visão pessoal sobre a liberdade que o amadorismo me permite. Foi sobre essa procura descomprometida que conversei com a plateia, mostrando um pouco do meu percurso. Fotografo o que encontro, sem pressas nem obrigações, e é essa natureza diversa que procuro mostrar. Falar sobre isso, num espaço onde todos respiram o mesmo interesse, é gratificante.
No entanto, estas palavras não servem apenas para fazer um balanço do evento ou da minha palestra. Serve, acima de tudo, para deixar um agradecimento à organização. Acredito que os obrigados têm nome e por isso obrigado ao Manuel, ao Pedro e ao João, pelo esforço que ano após ano fazem para juntar as peças de um puzzle, mas também à Barbara pela forma como apresenta o festival, que de uma forma genuína e cuidada como apresenta e dá, em palco, a cara pelo festival.
Muitas vezes, quem vai a estes festivais não imagina a complexidade logística que existe nos bastidores. A forma cuidada, atenciosa e próxima como a organização recebe quem lá vai, sejam oradores ou público, já tive nos dois papeis, é visível, sentimo-nos bem-vindos, num ambiente próximo, quase que familiar. É essa proximidade que facilita a troca de ideias e cria laços que perduram. Existem pessoas que só tenho oportunidade de falar quando vou a Vouzela.
Durante o fim de semana, houve apresentações, conversas, trocas de ideias. Gente que fotografa por paixão, gente que faz disso profissão, gente que está a começar. Independentemente do estilo fotográfico ou campo de ação, todos no mesmo espaço, sem hierarquias, apenas com vontade de partilhar. É esse o espírito do Insitu, e é isso que o torna especial.
